From her obituary printed in the "The Herald", of Mahaska Co, IA, adted 2 March 1899:
Mrs. Sarah Juliette Houghtaling, whose death occurred at 9:00 p.m. on 20 February 1899 at the residence of Mrs. R.H. Kentfield in Jefferson Township where she made her home for a number of years.
Mrs. Houghtaling was the daughter of Daniel and Fanny Covey, born in Broome County, New York 26 May 1819 and married John Houghtaling in 1839.
In 1846 the family moved to Mahaska County in wagons in company with a brother and his family, arriving at the home of her Uncle Hiram Covey in September of that year.
The next spring they bought and moved upon what is now the Patrick farm. Her father coming to them the next spring, an exchange was made by which they purchased the farm now owned by J. Shaw. Selling this, they bought the farm which has been her home for over forty years, except for the last two years when old age has made it impossible to care for herself.
Her husband dying 1856, she was left with five small children to raise."
