William Derick was born on 1 January 1795 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec. He was the son of Philip Derick and Anna Maria Brust. William Derick married Melinda Hurlbut, daughter of Wait Hurlbut and Bedea Holt. William Derick died on 30 July 1886 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec, at age 91.1 He was buried at Union Cemetery, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.2
He was Blacksmith. William Derick and his wife, Melinda "Hulbert" had a Deed of Donation to their son, Alonzo on 10 Nov 1840. Alonzo had been living with them on Lot #11 in the 4th Range or Concession of Noyan. The parents gave Alonzo the land and house, except for a bit of land with a blacksmith shop on it, reserved for William's use until his death. There were farm animals, wagons and ploughs were listed individually as part of the Gift. This was done with stipulation that Alonzo provide his parents "with good and sufficient board, meat, [and] drink". He was to take care of mending, should his mother be unable to do it, and furnish a carriage and horse for their use.
Alonzo was to also care for his sister, Elizabeth, until she might marry, as well as adopted child, Emma Avilia, now for years old. He was to make sure she received schooling. It would be interesting to learn how Emma fit in to the family.3 He appeared on the census of 1851 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec; William Derick, blacksmith, b.
