Sarah Waugh

     Sarah Waugh was born on 30 April 1849 at Northern Ireland. She was the daughter of David A. Waugh and Sarah Ervin. Sarah Waugh has also be reported to have been born circa 1853 Ireland.¹ She married Thomas A. Shilliday, son of William Shilliday and Susanna Bigham, on 30 November 1878 at Newton Centre, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; Thomas Shilday, 30, was son of William Shilday and Susanna Beegan; Sarah, 25, was daughter of David and Sarah Waugh. They were both b. Ireland, and it was their first marriage, both residents of Brookline. The marriage was performed by D.L. Furber, Pastor of First Church, Newton Centre.¹ Sarah Waugh died on 14 August 1938 at Framingham, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts, at age 89; Her obituary said "Sarah Shilliedy, a resident of Framingham for over 60 years, passed away suddenly Sunday morning at the Home for the Aged, where she had a resident for about a year. She was born in Ireland, April 30, 1849, the daughter of David and Sarah Waugh. Her husband, Thomas Shilliedy, passed away about nine years ago.
She is survived by three nieces, Mrs. Arthur S. Bickford, Mrs Ella Downey and Mrs. Nellie Craig of Framingham, and three nephews, William J. and David A. Waugh of Framingham and William Waugh of Ohio. Funeral services will be held at the Cookson Chapel, Tuesday at 2:30 PM. Dr. William A. Knight will officiate. Interment will be in Edgell Grove Cemetery."² She was buried at Edgell Grove Cemetery, Framingham, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts.²
     She and Thomas A. Shilliday appeared on the census of 14 June 1900 at Framingham, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; Thomas was aged 60, and Sarah aged 48; Sarah entered the United States in 1873 from Ireland, Thomas in 1872. They then owned a farm on Capen Street. Four childen had been born to her by 1900, but none were living.³ Sarah Waugh and Thomas A. Shilliday appeared on the census of 26 May 1910 at Capen Street, Framingham, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; Thomas "Shelliddy", 64 and Sarah, 60, married 32 yearsTheir nephew William James Waugh, 27, was also living with them.⁴ Sarah Waugh appeared on the census of 9 April 1930 at Framingham, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; Sarah Waugh Shillieday was listed as age 80, as a roomer in the house of Arthur Bickford. The very intriguing part of this enumeration was that she indicated (if it was her giving the info) that her father was born Scotland, and her mother born Northern Ireland. It states she came in 1873. The census also says she was born Northern Ireland.⁵
