     Alexander Carter was born in 1774 at Point of View, Duplin Co, North Carolina. He was the son of Solomon Carter. Alexander Carter married Sarah Whitfield Herring, daughter of Sarah Whitfield, on 6 June 1795 at Duplin Co, North Carolina; The bondsman was his father, Solomon Carter.1,3 Alexander Carter died in September 1852 at New Bern, Craven Co, North Carolina.2 His estate was probated on 13 November 1852 at Craven Co, North Carolina.2
     He appeared on the census of 1800 at Duplin Co, North Carolina; He was head of the household of 4 "other free".3 He left a will on 3 March 1851 at Craven Co, North Carolina; A resident of Craven County, Alexander Carter left a tract of land in Craven Co, known as the Moose Tract to his grandson, Alexander, son of his son Arthur. He was giving Arthur the "privilege" of residing on and working the land until Alexander turned 21. He stipulated that should he die without heirs, the land was to go to Arthur's two youngest children. He also left grandson Alexander a 50 acre tract lying on Rocky Run in Craven County which could be worked by his father until he turned 21. The Will continued to detail other grandchildren's bequests. Of specific interest is he gave granddaughter Sally Carter, wife of Clem Carter, and daughter of Bryant Carter, a lot lying between Pembrook and Trent Road. He left his wife Janet the lot in New Bern at the corner of George and New Street, along with his "negro woman Love".4
