Sophia Wait

     Sophia Wait was born circa 1773 at prob New York; I have found no direct proof that Sarah was the sister of Briggs and Enoch, but evidence does point that way. She was born at the right time, and likely with her father George Wait in Ontario while he was there, she would probably have married Jonathan Gorham there. He was there in 1795, and their eldest son was born there. There was definitely a close relationship between the couple and the Waits. Her proposed brother Enoch, and his wife Sarah Salls, named a daughter Hannah Paulina Gorham Wait. Sophia Wait and husband Jonathan Gorham named a daughter Sarah Paulina Wait Gorham. After years of trying to prove this, I can find nothing additional that would discount the theory.^1,2 She was the daughter of George Wait and Elizabeth (?) Sophia Wait married Jonathan Gorham before 1795. Sophia Wait died on 27 July 1842 at Huntingdon Co, Quebec.¹ She was buried at Union Church Cemetery, Havelock, Huntingdon Co, Quebec.¹
     She witnessed the baptism of Hannah Paulina Gorham Wait on 21 June 1825 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.³ Sophia Wait witnessed the baptism of Peter Alexander Gorham on 21 June 1825 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec; Nathan Smith was an additional witness.⁴ Sophia Wait witnessed the burial of Jonathan Gorham on 3 July 1825 at St George's Anglican, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.⁵ Sophia Wait witnessed the baptism of Sarah Brown Gorham on 19 September 1830 at Caldwell's Manor, (now Missisquoi Co), Quebec.⁶
