Berengaria of Castile was born on 1 June 1180 at Burgos, Spain; At the time of her birth, Berengaria was the only child of the king and queen, as those born earlier had not survived. Therefore she was the heir apparent to the throne of Castile, and hence a greatly desired party in all of Europe.1 She married Alfonso IX of Leon, son of Ferdinand II of León and Urraca, in 1197 at Spain.1 Berengaria of Castile died on 8 November 1246 at Las Huelgas near Burgos, Spain, at age 66.1 She was buried at Capilla Real, Granada, Spain.1
