Cuthwine was born circa 565.1 He was the son of Ceawlin King of Wessex. Cuthwine died after 593; His father and uncles died then and Cuthwine went into exile.1
Cuthwine was born in the 5th year of his father's reign over the West Saxons. He was a grandson of Cynric, the son of Cerdic, the first of the Saxons to come across the sea from Germany; and he and his people were still relatively out of place in a world dominated by the Britons. Nothing is known of his early life.
He ended up going in to exile years later, following the deaths in battle of his father and other family members.
A bit later, it was Caedwalla of Wessex and then Ine of Wessex became king; both great-grandsons of Cuthwine. Egbert of Wessex, ancestor of the later Kings of England, descends from Ine's brother and hence also from Cuthwine.1
