     Margaret Carrigan was born on 26 March 1794 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, Vermont; The obituary reads that she was "the daughter of Paul Carrigan and at the early age of six years was left an orphan and went to live with her aunt, Mrs. Theophilus Mansfied, of Swanton, with whom she resided until her marrage with Henry Stinehour, Nov. 7, 1813. She lived with her husband at Swanton, until the 16th day of October, 1833, when they moved to Highgate Falls and went to a hotel. They kept the hotel at that place for about five years, when they moved to the north side of the river, then a wilderness, and erected a hotel, it being the first building in what is now called Highgate Center, where they kept the hotel until the death of her husband, April 16, 1867. Since the death of her husband, the hotel has been kept and managed by her with the assistance of two maiden daughters. While she resided with her uncle, Theophilus Mansfield, she was very instrumental in carrying messages from the Americans, at Swanton, to friends at Missisquoi Bay, in Canada within the British lines, during the War of 1812. She often performed the journey on foot, and upon one occasion came near being drowned, on account of high water. Her whole life has been noted for her kindness to the sick and her benevolence to the poor. I do not think a person was ever sent away hungrey from her house, whether they had money or not; and she was ever ready to assist the poor or comfort the sick. The reputation of the Stinehour Hotel is too widely known to need comment, and we can safely say that it gained it notoriety from the superior qualities of the deceased. She leaves three daughters and one son to mourn her loss. She was a affectionate wife and mother, a kind and benevolent citizen, and her death will be mourned by a wide circle of relatives and friends."

The obituary offers so much information, it is a wonderful testament to her as a person.1,2 She was the daughter of Paul Carrigan and Mary Scott. Margaret Carrigan married Henry Stinehour on 7 November 1813.1,3 Margaret Carrigan died on 21 December 1873 at Episcopal Cemetery, Highgate, Franklin Co, Vermont, at age 79.3,4
