     James M. Tallman was born on 5 May 1842 at Hemmingford, Huntingdon Co, Quebec.1,2,3 He was the son of Dexter Tallman and Hannah Jeandreau. James M. Tallman was born on 29 November 1842 at Hemmingford, Huntingdon Co, Quebec; This birthdate was found on the Fid-A-Grave site, but not sure if the stone says that since there is no photo.4 He married Jane Hewitt on 14 March 1864 at Mooers Forks, Clinton Co, New York. James M. Tallman died on 16 May 1933 at Cheshire, Berkshire Co, Massachusetts, at age 91; "James M. Tallman, 91, Cheshire's sole surviving Union veteran of the Civil War, died this morning at 6:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Pelkey of Depot street, Cheshire, from injuries sustained in a fall last Friday. Owing to his advanced ae, his condition had been regarded as critical from the time he was injured.
Mr. Tallman was born on May 5, 1842 in Hemingford [sic], Canada, the son of Dexter and Hannah Tallman and at the age of two years was brought to this country by his parents who settled in New York state. At the age of 18, soon after the outbreak of the Civial war, Mr. Tallman enlisted with Co. F. 96th New York Volunteers and was soon in the midst of active fighting. He was wounded during one of the heaviest battles of the war and upon recovering from his injuries was honorably discharged. The desire for excitement and action was deeply imbued in mr. Tallman and soon after he was discharged he re-enlisted for a three-year term. After ending his soldiering days, he returned to New York stat until about 17 years ago when he retired from active work and came to Cheshire to make his home. He had resided there since tgen.
Mr. Tallman was in unsually good health for a man of his years up to the time that he met with his accident...[cut]"
On March 14, 1864, he was married to Jane Hewitt, who died on March 5, 1916, at Morris Fort, NY. To this union, five children were born, two of whom survive Mr. Tallman. Mrs. Pelkey and a son John James Tallman of Malone, NY. He also leaves a brother, Thomas Tallman of Vermont who is also a Union veteran, 19 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren."3,4 He was buried after 16 May 1933 at Union Cemetery, Mooers Forks, Clinton Co, New York.4
     He immigrated in 1844 to New York.3,2 James Tallman enlisted 20 Nov 1862 at Mooers for the 96th Infantry as a Private. He was then single, and resided at Plattsburgh.1 He appeared on the census of 26 July 1870 at Mooers, Clinton Co, New York.5 He appeared on the census of 25 June 1880 at Mooers, Clinton Co, New York.6 He appeared on the census of 6 July 1900 at Malone, Franklin Co, New York; James Tallman, 48, born Canada, Jane, 56, born Canada, married 36 years; they had three children, with two still living. Walter Brown, 5, grandson with also with them.7 He appeared on the census of 1920 at Cheshire, Berkshire Co, Massachusetts; James "Tolman", 77, was living with his daughter, Sarah, and her husband, George Pelkie.8 James' sister, Sarah Pelkey of Cheshire, MA ordered a headstone from the War Dept for him. It showed James served with the 9th Regmt, NY Vols. Pension Certificate 116 553. The stone was shipped to JB Davison at Mooers Forks 30 Sep 1936.9
