Sarah Maria Wood

     Sarah Maria Wood was born on 20 April 1836 at New Brunswick.¹ She was the daughter of William D. Wood and Olivia Hovey Williams. Sarah Maria Wood married George Thomas Bartlett on 21 July 1855 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.² Sarah Maria Wood died on 19 December 1905 at Little Ridge, Albert Co, New Brunswick, at age 69. She was buried at Bayview Cemetery, Harvey Bank, Albert Co, New Brunswick.³
     In a written record dated 13 Dec 1963 by Josephine McLatchey, a Bartlett descendant, tells that "Sometime about 1900 your great great grandmother Bartlett, with considerable bitterness, told of the way her grandparents or great grandparents were treated by their New England neighbors who took all their valuables, even their silver spoons." There has always been that underlying story of the Wood and/or Williams families coming from New England, and even this branch of the family in Albert County has the same. She and George Thomas Bartlett appeared on the census of 1861 at New Horton, Albert Co, New Brunswick; George Bartlett, 32, along with Sarah M., 27, Julia A., 4, and Olivia H., 2. George was a ship carpenter and the family were all Baptists.⁴ Sarah Maria Wood and George Thomas Bartlett appeared on the census of 1871 at Harvey, Albert Co, New Brunswick; George Bartlett, 41, Mariah, 35, Julia, 14, Olivia, 11, Georgena, 7, George W., 4, and Ida, 1. George was a ship carpenter and an Episcopalian; The rest of the family was Baptist.⁵ Sarah Maria Wood and George Thomas Bartlett appeared on the census of 1881 at Harvey, Albert Co, New Brunswick; George Bartlett, 50, ship carpenter; Sarah, 46; Julia A., 22; Olivia H., 21; Georgia L., 17; William G., 13; Ina L., 11 and Abner E., 7. George Bartlett was a Methodist, and his wife and family were Baptists.⁶ Sarah Maria Wood and George Thomas Bartlett appeared on the census of 1901 at Harvey, Albert Co, New Brunswick; George Bartlett, 75, farmer; Maria, 64, Julia, 43, and Abner, 26, sailor.⁷
