Phoebe Salls was born circa 1780 at Canaan, Columbia Co, New York; Although likely, Phoebe was born in Canaan, the 1851 census of St Armand has her born in Connecticut. Of course, a census record does not indicate who was was offering the information at that time.1 She was the daughter of Jacob Salls and Margaret Taylor. Phoebe Salls was baptized on 3 August 1783 at New Lebanon, Columbia Co, New York.2 She married Ebenezer Kelton on 13 August 1800 at St Gabriel's Presbyterian, Montreal, Montreal Co, Quebec; Ebenezer and Phebe were both of the parish of Laprairie and of age.3 Phoebe Salls married Gamaliel Little after 1813.4 Phoebe Salls died on 20 July 1864; aged "82."
Records held within Kelton's pension file for the War of 1812 indicate he "in consequence" of sickness or disability incurred during his service.
He enlisted 15 Mar 1813 near Montpelier, and for 5 years. He served as a Private in Capt. Leavenworth's and Murdock's companies, 25th Regiment of the US Infantry. He was survived by his wife and two children, Delinda and Arden. The record shows he was married to Phebe 3 Aug 1801 in Laprairie.
Pension certificate #444 for five years half-pay was paid to his brother, Naum Kelton, guardian to Ebenezer's children. The pension began 17 Feb 1815 and ended 17 Feb 1820. The children were residents of Washington Co, Vermont at that time.
Anyone who is a descendant of this couple should obtain the full file on Fold3. It is a very informative file, with much more than I have here.5 She appeared on the census of 1851 at St Armand, Missisquoi Co, Quebec; Phebe Little, widow, was living with her daughter Delinda Kelton Kemp and her family.6 Phoebe's application for pension was executed 26 Mar 1853 when she was 71 yrs old. She was then living in Frelighsburg, where she had been since 1840.5
