Mary Jane Scott was born on 22 August 1848 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.1,2 She was the daughter of John Scott Jr. and Sarah Young. Mary Jane Scott was baptized on 10 September 1853 at Clarenceville Methodist Church, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.3 She married Leander C. Barnes, son of Cyrus P. Barnes and Lois Downey, on 10 March 1866. Mary Jane Scott died on 24 September 1926 at Lake Street, Chateaugay, Franklin Co, New York, at age 78;
Mary died at her home at after a short illness. Three weeks earlier she "was stricken with a paralytic shock which practically left her in a helpless condition, and she was unable to rally from the effects although all that medical aid and loving care could do was bestowed upon her".
She had come to Burke as a small child, and after her marriage to Leander, they lived in Chateaugay.
She had been a member of the M.E. Church, and left her husband, two daughters, Mrs. E.A. Hinds of St Petersburg, FL; Mrs H.E. Thompson, of this village; five sons, John, Albert S., George, Leander, Jr; and Elmer, all of CHateaugay; one sister, Mrs. Selom Cook of Lexington, MA, and one brother, Asel Scott of Huntingdon, Quebec.2,4 She was buried at East Side Cemetery, Chateaugay, Franklin Co, New York.2
