Æthelwulf's Ring shows a distinct Carolingian theme, rather than Anglo-Saxon. It bears his title, Æthelwulf rex, and the decoration has been identified as the early Christian image of two peacocks flanking the tree of life similar to a baptismal image associated with the court school of Charlemagne.
