Mary Briggs was born circa 1757; For a while, this writer thought that Mary must be the daughter of Elkanah Briggs and Susanna Hunt of Chatham, next to Canaan, where Salls had lived. But, their daughter Mary, died "in her 43rd year" in 1804, and her gravestone mentions her as a daughter of Elkanah. So obviously, she was not the Mary who m. Hix Salls, and died in 1839, being well documented by notarial docs and her burial in within Anglican records.1 She married Hix Salls, son of Isaac Salls and Hannah Hawley, circa 1775; Although no record has been located, it is certain that Mary Briggs was the wife of Hix Salls. There are several notarial records stating her as such. One, after Hix' death was 31 May 1828, when Mary Briggs, widow Salls, sold land to both B. Salls and E. Salls, her sons.2 Mary Briggs died on 20 June 1839 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.3 She was buried on 22 June 1839 at St George's Anglican Cemetery, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.3
On 22 July 1835, Mary Briggs, then widow of Hix Salls, came before Leon Lalanne, notary, and in a Renunciation to Philip H. Moore, it is mentioned that a Deed of Donation by her son Enoch Salls and wife Rebecca Filer was passed before E. Faribault 13 March 1828 in favor of Hix Salls, "her grandson". She renounces any claim in favor of Philip Moore, tutor for the minor children of Hix and "their mother". Since her son Enoch and her grandson, Hix, had both died earlier, she wanted to aid in the welfare of Hix children.4
