Abraham Wait

     Abraham Wait was born on 4 July 1822 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.^1,2 He was the son of Enoch Wait and Sarah Salls. Abraham Wait was baptized on 22 September 1822 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.³ He married Almira Ann Salls, daughter of Abraham Salls and Sophia Bissell, on 20 February 1844 at Free Will Baptist Church, Eaton, Compton Co, Quebec.⁴ Abraham Wait married Harriet N. Brown on 6 September 1862 at Hatley Anglican Church, Hatley, Stanstead Co, Quebec; At the time of his marriage to Harriet Brown, Abraham was a resident of Waterville.⁵ Abraham Wait died on 10 January 1884 at Whitby, Ontario South, Ontario, at age 61; According to Ontario records, Abraham Waite died aged 61 yrs 6 mos, labourer, from lung inflammation (five days). Informant was G.F. Waite of Whitby.^6,7,8
     He appeared on the census of 1851 at Lingwick, Compton Co, Quebec; Abraham Wait, 30, Jul 4, Episc; Almira, 28, Nov 6, Bapt; Charlotte, 8, Nov 28, Episc; Matilda, 4, July 10; and Sophia, 3, Nov 24. The census records of Lingwick are interesting because they state age next birthday, and the enumerator took their age, along with their birth month and day.² He appeared on the census of 1881 at Whitby, Ontario South, Ontario; Abraham Wait, 55, Harriet, 43, George, 17, Harriet, 14. Also in the household were Thomas H.R. Dee, 13, and Bessie Jane Dee, 10. All were members of the Church of England.
His youngest children were found in the household of Edward J. Johnson, 36, b. Ont: Ella Wait, 9, Lucy Wait, 8, and Martha Wait, 5. Edward was listed as married, but no wife was enumerated, nor were there any other members of his household, other than the Wait children. He was Methodist, and the children were all listed as Church of England.⁹
