     Mary Kitchen was born in 1791 at Birstall, Yorkshire, England.1 She was the daughter of Richard Kitchen and Elizabeth Binns. Mary Kitchen was baptized on 6 November 1791 at Hartshead, Yorkshire, England; Her father Richard was of Hightown in the parish of Birstall, "a tannor."2 She married John Smith on 16 April 1811 at Saint Michael Spurriergate, York, Yorkshire, England; The marriage certificate indicates he was a Private and a guard with the R.F. Dragoon. They were both of that parish. Witness was a Jane Mackgill. Jane married in York in 1813 to a Dwier, who belonged to the same parish. He was also a member of the Dragoon Guard's 4th. Had hoped for a Kitchen or Smith connection, but no luck.3,4
     Mary Kitchen appeared on the census of 1841 at St Dennis, York, Yorkshire, England; Mary Smith, 50, John Smith, 25, Catherine, 19 and Edward, 16, iron moulder, all born Yorkshire.5
