     Edward S. Smith was born on 2 February 1822 at York, Yorkshire, England.1 He was christened on 23 February 1822 at Little Blake Street Chapel, York, Yorkshire, England.1,2 He was the son of John Smith and Mary Kitchen. Edward S. Smith married Elizabeth Curry, daughter of William Curry and Mary Ann Shores, on 15 June 1846 at St Mark's Woodhouse, Leeds, Yorkshire, England; At the time of marriage, Elizabeth's residence was Woodhouse Carr while Edward Smith's was Woodhouse. Both were listed as "above 21". Edward Smith's father was John Smith and Elizabeth Pearson's was listed as William Curry. She was a widow at marriage. Witnesses were John Harrison and Rebecca Goodrich. He was an Iron Moulder.3 Edward S. Smith died on 24 December 1882 at 17 Clapham Street, Holbeck, Yorkshire, England, at age 60; Ellen Fenteman of 15 John street, Leeds, was present at the time of death. He had been an iron moulder, and died from bronchitis.4,5,6
     He appeared on the census of 1841 at Parish of St. Dennis, York, Yorkshire, England.7 He appeared on the census of 1851 at 3 Barley Row, Leeds, Yorkshire, England; Edward Smith was listed as 29, born York, and an iron moulder; Elizabeth, 30 born Harewood, Yorkshire; also Isaac, 7 and Mary, 1, b. Leeds. His sister, Catherine Smith, was listed as a vistor in their household in 1851, born ca 1819 York, Yorkshire.8,9 He appeared on the census of 1861 at 3 Fletcher Court, Leeds, Yorkshire, England; Fletcher Court is also located in the south municipal ward of Leeds. Edward, 40, b. York, iron moulder, wife Elizabeth, 41, b. Sicklinghall, and son Isaac Pearson, 17, iron moulder. Mary was not listed, but family members were Eliza, aged 10, Ellen, aged 8, Hannah, 5, and Frances S., 3, all three born Leeds. Perhaps Mary in 1851 was actually Mary Eliza, and this was the Eliza of 1861.10 He appeared on the census of 1871 at 5 Front Street, Leeds (South), Yorkshire, England; Edwin Smith aged 50 [Ancestry has him as age 30 in their index], b. York; Elizabeth aged 52 b. Sickly Hall; Hannah 16, Fanny 13, and Mary Ann, 8, all three born Leeds. Also living with them was a 22 year old lodger by the name of Samuel Lee. This area was also part of Campfield, Leeds.11 He appeared on the census of 1881 at 19 Clapham Street, Holbeck, Yorkshire, England; Edward Smith, 60, and wife Elizabeth, 62, were living with their daughter Hannah, 24, her husband Thomas Smithson, 23, and their infant son, James, 3 mos. Edward Smith was an unemployed iron moulder.
Frances Dean, "sister" was also living there with her son John Munday Dean, then aged 2.6
