James McCoy Sharpe was born on 10 April 1774 at Iredell Co, North Carolina.1 He was the son of John Sharpe and Lilly McCoy. James McCoy Sharpe married Elizabeth Black, daughter of William Black and Rebeckah (?), at Iredell Co, North Carolina. James McCoy Sharpe was buried at Snow Creek Methodist Church Cemetery, near Harmony, Iredell Co, North Carolina. He died before August 1816 at Iredell Co, North Carolina.2
James McCoy Sharpe was born in what was to later become Sharpesburg Township.
Little is known about the life of James McCoy Sharpe since he kept himself out of the public eye, unlike several others of his family. He was a tanner and their tanning mill was on a small stream which ran between his house and that of his father.
After James died in 1816, his wife relinquished her right to administration of his estate, dated 15 Nov 1816. His brother-in-law was appointed administrator and Andrew Adams was appointed guardian to his minor children. Elizabeth, his widow, was granted allowance for herself and children for one year. His land was divided between his children after Elizabeth's dower was paid. The remainder of his estate was sold off at auction on 22 Mar 1817, the furniture being purchased by Elizabeth for herself and family. A slave named Stephen was sold to his brother Silas. For many years after her husband's death, Elizabeth lived with her daughter Rebecca, who never married.3,2
