William Henry Hughes was born on 10 August 1830 at North Carolina.1,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Benjamin Hughes and Nancy Oliver. William Henry Hughes married Nancy A. Worley, daughter of John Worley and Julia Johnson, on 13 January 1859 at Johnston Co, North Carolina; The marriage bond was filed the day before, on Jan. 12.1,2 William Henry Hughes died on 25 September 1916 at Smithfield, Johnston Co, North Carolina, at age 86; He had a fall and was injured.4 He was buried after 25 September 1916 at Yelverton Grove Church Cemetery, Smithfield, Johnston Co, North Carolina.4
He appeared on the census of 1870 at Smithfield, Johnston Co, North Carolina; William Hughes, 38, Nancy, 29, Mary A.L., 8, Delia, 6, Della, 3 and Dora, 1.6 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Smithfield, Johnston Co, North Carolina; William Hues, 46, Nancy, 41, Mary, 17, Delia, 15, Della, 13, Ella, 11, James, 5 and Fleda, 2.5 Apparently, William did not get along with his son-n-law, John Britt, who married daughter Fleda. Amusing story.7
He appeared on the census of 1900 at Creech, Johnston Co, North Carolina; William Hughs, 68, Nancy A., 62, George E. 17, Levi J., 15 and John R., 13. William and Nancy had married about 1859, having been married 41 years. William owned their house and was free of any mortgage.1 He appeared on the census of 26 April 1910 at Creech, Johnston Co, North Carolina; William Hughes, 81, Nancy, 71 and son John, 44. This census indicates the house was mortgaged, as opposed to the 1900 census which showed he owned it free of mortgage.3
