Zalmon Skinner was born circa 1800 at Columbia Co, New York. He married Rachel Salls, daughter of Isaac Salls and Margaret Doubleday, circa 1820 at New York; Sketches about the family were written by Orlando's wife, Martha J. Reeder Skinner. She indicates "Zalmon Skinner, his father, was of English descent. His mother, whose maiden name was Rachel Salls, was of Scotch parantage".1,2
Zalmon Skinner appeared on the census of 1850 at Mason Co, Illinois; Zalmon Skinner, 50, Rachel, 50, Olivia, 29, Sarah Jane, 26, Eliza, 24, Orlando, 22, Myron, 17. All were born in NY, except for Myron, who was born n Illinois.1 He appeared on the census of 24 June 1870 at Lima, Pepin Co, Wisconsin; Zalmon Skinner, 73, wife Rachel, 73, both had no occupations; Eliza, 43, Orlando, 42, all b. NY; wife Martha E., 42, Alice E., 17, Otis Z., 16, b. Illinois; Aaron M., 14, Mabel, 8, Henry, 6, all b. WI.3
