James William Tryon was born on 23 May 1823 at Quebec.2,3 He was the son of William Tryon and Sarah Scott. James William Tryon married Eliza Deveno, daughter of Peter Deveno.4 James William Tryon died on 28 January 1909 at Lowell Hospital, Lowell, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts, at age 85; "Mr. James Tryon, a veteran of the Civil war, died Thursday night at the Lowell Hospital. He leaves a widow, two sons, Wallace of this city and William of Manchester, and two daughters, Mrs. Charles D. Moulfried of Manchester and Mrs. James Gordon of this city. He also leaves 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren." He was 85 years old. He had died from pneumonia.5,6 He was buried on 31 January 1909 at Edson Cemetery, Lowell, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; "The funeral of James Tryon took place yesterday afternoon at his late residence, 449 Dutton street. The services were conducted by Rev. George F. Kenngott, pastor of the First Trinitarian Congregational church. The bearers were Mssrs. Arthur Tryan, Henry Gordon, Royal Tryon and Fred Clements. Burial was in the family lot in the Edson cemetery, in charge of Mr. George H. Cummings, under the direction of Undertaker George W. Healey."7
James Tryon's birth date has been hard to pinpoint. The 1860 census would point to 1830; 1870 census to 1823 and the 1880 census would equal 1825. The 1900 census indicates May 1824. The writer will go with 1824, since his death notice gives an age of 85 years. His death certificate indicates he was 86 yrs of age, residence was 449 Dutton Street, Lowell, father and mother unknown, but the birthplace of mother was placed as Scotland.8 He appeared on the census of 3 September 1860 at Mooers, Clinton Co, New York; James was shown as age 38 (or so it appears), wife Eliza 30, along with son William, age 10, Elizabeth 8, Mary 5, and Willie 2.4 He appeared on the census of 25 July 1870 at Lowell, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; James was listed as a teamster, aged 47, b. Canada; Eliza was a housekeeper, aged 38 born Vermont. Children were Wallace, 20, Lizzie 18, Mary 15, Nellie 12 and Willie 3. The four eldest were born in New York while Willie is listed as born New Hampshire. Wallace, Lizzie and Mary all worked at the woolen mill, and Nellie was in school. There were six others listed as of that household, but showing no relation.9 He appeared on the census of 10 June 1880 at Lowell, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; James was listed as 55, Eliza as 48, Wallace 30 and Willie G. as 12 yrs old. There was a James McCoy, 60, b. NH, butcher, also living with the family. Strangely, James had his father as born in CT and his mother's birthplace was not listed.10 He lived in 1889 at 77 Liberty, Lowell, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts.11 He appeared on the census of 11 June 1900 at 99 Harrison Street, Manchester, Hillsborough Co, New Hampshire; James Tryon, 76, and wife Eliza, 68, were living with their daughter, Nellie and her husband, Charles DeMaulfried and their children.12
