     Whitfield Dewitt Wood was born on 30 September 1879 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.1,2 He was the son of William Judson Wood and Eveline Daley. Whitfield Dewitt Wood married Martha Lowe, daughter of William Lowe and Ann Crompton, on 8 September 1903 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Whitfield, 23, of Montreal, Quebec, was a scythe maker and Baptist. Martha, 20, was of St Stephen, New Brunswick, born England and a Methodist.3,1 Whitfield Dewitt Wood died on 18 January 1936 at Lynn, Essex Co, Massachusetts, at age 56; St Stephen, NB, Jan 30, The funeral of Whitfield D. Wood, 56, former superintendent of the St. Stephen Shoe Company,whose death occurred in Massachusetts on Sunday, was here Wednesday afternoon at the home of his father-in-law, William Lowe, Church Street. Rev. P.A. Fitzpatrict officiated. The bearers were brother Masons, Henry Pinkerton, W.W. Quartermain, Verne Steeves and A.C. Gregory. Interment was in the Rural cemetery.
Mr. Wood came to St. Stephen when a boy. He was employed in Montreal and then in Lynn, Mass., where he entered the shoe business and rose to different executive positions. He was superintendent of the now discontinued st Stephen shoe factory for six years, returning to Lynn, where he had since made his home. His health failed him some months ago.
He is survived by his wife, who was Martha Lowe of St Stephen ; his son, Whitfield, D. Jr of Lynn, and one daugther, Sally, at home; his parents, Mr and Mrs William Wood, two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Davidson and Miss Violet Wood, his brothers, William, Joseph and Carey, all of St John and a brother, Stanley, of Hudson.4,1
He was buried at St Stephen, Charlotte Co, New Brunswick.
     On 11 September 1918, Whitfield enlisted for the service from Lynn, Massachusetts. He was a foreman at the Top Notch Shoe Co. He and wife Marth awere then residing at 62 Broad Street, Lynn.5 He appeared on the census of 17 January 1920 at 62 Broad Street, Lynn, Essex Co, Massachusetts; Whitfield D. Wood, 40, Martha, 36, Whitfield P., 6, Sarah E., 1; Also Jeanetta M. Wilson, 28, servant; Lodgers Debra R. Sweezey, 50 and Frances Mcmahon, 21. Whitfield was the Superintendent of a shoe factory and his home was rented.6 He was naturalized on 24 July 1922; Certificate 1598390.7 Membership card from the Masons show Whit's residence as Hudson, Massachusetts. He initiated membership in Mar1919 and was initiated 12 May 1919. He was listed as an Asst. Supt. The organization indicated he was deceased as of 19 Jan 1936.8
