John Frederick Cheyne

     John Frederick Cheyne was born on 7 May 1855 at Cheyne's Settlement, Kings Co, New Brunswick.¹ He was the son of Robert Cheyne and Lavinia W. Cronk. John Frederick Cheyne married Marjorie Irving on 21 May 1879. John Frederick Cheyne married Rebecca McLellan Wood, daughter of Joseph Williams Wood and Elizabeth Brown Howard, on 12 December 1882 at Portland Street Methodist Church, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.² John Frederick Cheyne died on 22 May 1934 at Water Street, Bathurst, Gloucester Co, New Brunswick, at age 79; According to John F. Cheyne's obituary, sent by Ethel Kirkpatrick, he had come to Bathurst about 1914 "in the employ of the Dominion department of Public Works. For many years he was employed at the pulp and paper mill as an engineer. He is survived by his wife, one sone, Harold J., Detroit and for daughters, Mrs. A. F. Kirkpatrick, Wirral, Mrs. C.G. Eddy and Mrs. E.H. Chalmers, Bathurst and Mrs. W.J. Johnston, Saint John. Mr. and Mrs. Chalmers accompanied the body t Saint John where burial will be held."^3,4 He was buried on 24 May 1934 at Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.⁵
     He appeared on the census of 1881 at Portland Parish, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; John F. Cheyne, 26, widowed and son Robert, 1, were living in the household of Lavinia Apt.⁶ He appeared on the census of 6 April 1891 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Rebecca Cheyne, 32, was listed in one household with her parents and two sisters (see Joseph Williams 1891 entry). John F. Cheyne, 34, Minnie Cheyne, 7, Ethel A, 5, Harold J, 3 and Grace A, 3/12 and another dozen people that must have been lodging there in a separate household, but in one house. John Cheyne and children were Methodist.⁷ He appeared on the census of 1901 at Guy's Ward, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; John F. Cheyne, 45, Rebecca, 42, Minnie, 17, Ethel, 15, Harold, 13, Grace, 10, Bella, 7, Luella, 4, and Frederick, 2.⁸
