Joseph Henry Dean

     Joseph Henry Dean was born on 5 May 1861 at 7 Melinda Court, Hunslet, Yorkshire, England.^1,2 He was the son of James Dean and Sarah Munday. Joseph Henry Dean married Sophia Gill, daughter of Samuel Gill and Sarah (?), on 24 June 1882 at Dracut, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; Their marriage was registered in both Lowell and Dracut, Massachusetts.³ Joseph Henry Dean died on 20 April 1923 at The Corporation Hospital, Lowell, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts, at age 61; Saunders Funeral Home was to handle the arrangements with burial to be in Portland, Maine.^4,5 He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, Cumberland Co, Maine.⁶
     He appeared on the census of 1881 at 8 Derby Place, Hunslet, Yorkshire, England; Joseph Henry Dean, then aged 19, was living with his widowed mother, Sarah Munday Dean and his sister, Rhoda.⁷ Joseph Dean emigrated from England, via the port of Liverpool, arriving in Boston 4 Jun 1882. He was naturalized on 13 October 1896 at Police Court, Lowell, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; Joseph was a resident of 62 C Street, Lowell.² He appeared on the census of 1910 at Lowell, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; Joseph Dean, 49, Sophia, 48, Charles H., 25, and Sadie A., 24. They had been married for 27 years, and had two children, both living. Both immigrated in 1883, and Joseph was naturalized.⁸ He appeared on the census of 15 January 1920 at Lowell, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts; The census shows Joseph was 58 and married, but no wife or children or listed. He had immigrated in 1884 and became naturalized in 1895.⁹ On March 27th, Joseph was found by his neighbor, William Palmer, unconscious and stretched out on his bed in his room. The neigbor had smelled gas, as he lived in the same house, and found two gas jets open. He was transferred to the Corporation Hospital in serious condition.¹⁰
