Lydia Branch

     Lydia Branch was born circa 1800 at Vermont.¹ She married Henry Salls, son of Isaac Salls and Elizabeth Crawford, on 19 September 1824 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.² Lydia Branch died after 1880 at Clinton Co, New York; Lydia Salls was still living in Jun 1880, as age 75, when enumerated with her son Stephen Hix and his family in Saranac.³
     On the 28th of August in 1842, Mariette Branch, wife of Calvin Dean was buried. Her sister, Lydia Salls was present. This may offer help for Branch researchers.
     Dr. Carroll Salls' book shows Stephen Hix Salls having only one son, William Henry. Joseph Ami was said to have been born 1 May 1842, which is certainly after Stephen Hix' death in January 1841, but I wonder if Ami's birth was actually May of 1841. More information is needed on the family of Lydia.⁴ She appeared on the census of 24 July 1860 at Westport, Essex Co, New York; Lydia Salls, 55, b. Vermont, and her son Ami, 17, a furnace man. Next door was William H. Salls, 35 and Mary, 28, his wife. It certainly proposes that William Henry Salls was the son of Henry Salls and Lydia Branch, and not the son of Stephen Hix Salls and Lydia Flagg, as the Salls book indicates.^5,4 She appeared on the census of 8 June 1865 at Westport, Essex Co, New York; Lydia Salls, 61, was living alone. She had given that she had been mother to seven children and married only once. We are still missing two of her Salls children.¹ She appeared on the census of 23 June 1870 at Westport, Essex Co, New York; Lydia Salls, aged 65, born Vermont, was keeping house for her son Oliver, aged 30.⁶
