Napolean Nathan Salls was born on 13 February 1848 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.1 He was the son of Isaac Salls Jr. and Mary Melissa Derick. Napolean Nathan Salls was baptized on 9 December 1850 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.1 He married Mary Jane Frost, daughter of John Frost and Angeline Tifft, on 15 August 1884 at Manchester, Bennington Co, Vermont; Nathan Salls was aged 33 and a traveling salesman. He was a resident of Manchester, Vermont. Mary was 16.2 Napolean Nathan Salls married Olive Betsy Colvin circa 1886; It is a strong possibility they did not marry because he was still married to Mary Frost until she divorced him in 1906.3 Napolean Nathan Salls and Mary Jane Frost were divorced on 8 June 1906 at Vermont; Mary Jane was the libelant in the case. The cause was desertion and aldultery. She specified that Nathan had abandoned her on 15 Sep 1884 - which was just one month following their marriage. The Petition for Divorce mentions Nathan was formerly of Manchester, but now of parts unknown.4,5 Napolean Nathan Salls died on 22 June 1925 at Beebe, Stanstead Co, Quebec, at age 77.6 He was buried at Marlington Cemetery, Stanstead, Stanstead Co, Quebec.6
On 30 Dec 1884, Napolean, who was living in Manchester, went before notary, Elie-Simon Mazurette, to make his Will. He left all his properrty, real and personal, to his brother, John D. Salls, still a minor. However, this was before Napolean married Olive, so he may have done a retraction years later. It was rather strange that Napolean wrote a Will in Dec 1884, before he married. If Nathan and Napolean are the same, was he protecting his property from his bride of several months, Mary Frost?7 He appeared on the census of 17 April 1891 at Stanstead, Stanstead Co, Quebec; Napolean Salls, 43, Olive, 32, Harold, 5, Percy, 4, and Lucy, 1. Next family enumerated was that of his parents and brother, John. Napolean was listed as a dry goods peddler, and the family was Presbyterian.8 He witnessed the death of Isaac Salls Jr. on 2 March 1893 at Glines Corners, Stanstead Co, Quebec; Certified Extract from the Superior Court of Saint Francis, taken from the Register of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials for Stanstead Plain and Beebe Plain, 1893.9
Lovell's Directory of 1898 shows Nathan N. Salls was a "market gardener" in Lineboro, Quebec, right on the VT-Quebec border, just north of North Derby.10 Napolean Nathan Salls witnessed the will of Gilbert Scott on 1 August 1907 at Stanstead, Stanstead Co, Quebec.11 Napolean Nathan Salls and Olive Betsy Colvin appeared on the census of 1921 at Stanstead, Stanstead Co, Quebec; Napolean Salls, 72 and Olive Betsy Salls, 53. The couple was said to then be Episcopalian.12
