Alfred Melville Covey was born on 27 February 1815 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, Vermont. He was the son of Samuel Covey and Anna Susannah Mitchell. Alfred Melville Covey married Jane Nokes Longeway, daughter of Augustus Longeway and Nancy Covey, on 15 December 1842 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, Vermont; Alfred was of Alburgh and Jane of Caldwell's Manor.1 Alfred Melville Covey married Cicely Saxe, daughter of John Saxe and Kate Reichard, on 25 March 1855. Alfred Melville Covey died on 22 February 1872 at Stanbridge, Missisquoi Co, Quebec, at age 56; Alfred was traveling to see his son, and when he got off the car at Alburgh Springs, he was riding with his son to Benjamin Reynolds place, he exclaimed:
"Oh! what a pain in my tooth; it goes right to my heart; it goes all over me," and fell back in the sleigh and died. It was likely a heart attack.2,3 He was buried on 25 February 1872 at Mystic Cemetery, Stanbridge, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.4
He appeared on the census of 1851 at Stanbridge, Missisquoi Co, Quebec; Alfred M. Covey, farmer, b. USA, Methodist, 37, Jane, b. Canada, 33, Benjamin, 8, Albert E., 7, Mary E., 5, Henry N., 3, Augustus M. 1, Francis A. Gorton, school teacher, Episcopalian, 22, and Adaline, school teacher, 18, no religious denomination.5
